Land of the Swallow
The Mayans called the island Cuzamil - from Cuzam (Swallow) and Lumil (Land of). For centuries, Mayan women pilgramaged here at least once in their life to pay homage to Ix Chel, the goddess of fertility and the moon. Following the Spanish conquest, the island became know as Cozumel.
